Say "Hello" To My Little Friend!

Crew! Something you should know about. We have recently purchased a "general field use" laptop for the Life Mission Department to be used as necessary by any of you guys for short-term ventures where a console would be advantageous.

Unfortunately, the unit doesn't really look like the picture here because we could only find Monster Truck tires for our unit... just kidding. Seriously, though, here are the specs for the laptop, as well as the uses, parameters and protocols for its use:

Specs:
* It's an IBM "Lenovo" T60 laptop computer (brand new)
* It is currently loaded with Windows XP, Microsoft Office, and some other "basic" applications.
* It is also loaded with iPass Internet software, so it can access the Internet from a variety of places around the world. We use this software consistently in India, even, when we blog our team trips.
* It has standard drives and ports for USB, as well as "modular" switch-outs for using either a) a spare battery or b) a DVD/CD-R drive (i.e. you can read and burn CD's, and can watch DVD's, but not burn DVD's).

Uses:
* You can use it to store files, rosters, data, photographs or whatever else for the duration of use.
* You can access the Internet from pretty much anywhere on the planet where you can get to a phone line, and even in some places where you cannot (provided that there is a Wi-Fi signal from somewhere).
* You can answer, check and respond to e-mail, access Basecamp, and do other cool Internetty kinds of things while you are away from your "standard" computer.

Parameters and Protocols:
* The laptop is for short term ventures. It is not for long term use or intended to become your personal laptop indefinitely. It should also not become a replacement for your computer, unless such is a short-term fix while your computer is being repaired or purchased.
* Before you can check the laptop out, you must be trained on its use by either Jack, Jeanna or Skip Dodge.
* When you check it out, you must let us know a) what you're going to do with it, b) how long you're going to need it, and c) when you're going to bring it back.
* You will need to wipe off whatever documents, photos or files you load onto the laptop before you bring it back.

If you think that the laptop would be of use for you, please just shoot a request for its use to Jeanna (jtripp@gccwired.com) and we will start the process of hooking you up.

We're also going to hold a contest to see who can come up with the coolest name for our new little friend. You can make your suggestions in the comments section. My vote is "LANnie".
